How much do your piggies cost you?

February 9th, 2010

I am just curious here around how much other people spend on their piggies and what brands of food and stuff they use. And what they have found works the best and worst!

Each of my piggy cost about $30 a month ( I have five)

For food, I use “Zupreem” food http://www.petmountain.com/category/281/1/guinea-pig.html?Brand=157 and
I go through a couple bags a month

And for timothy, alfalfa hay and orchard grass I go to wal-mart

I break up vitamin c capsules and put it in their water

They have to have their carrot crunchies, fruit n nut cakes, and honey bar treats!

And of course countless fruits and veggies.

What I find that does not work good are those little plastic food dishes, they dump them over! So I have big ceramic dog food dishes, lol.

Pine bedding doesn’t work on two of my poor little alergenic piggies..

And those “Kabob” toys, they don’t even mess with them!

I am just curious to see what other people use on their piggies and some new ideas!
The vet said that the treats are fine in moderation………..

This was the day that the food name ‘dim-sum’ (alfalfa hay) was still not familiar for them. The name has only been introduced 2 days before the video was taken.

Why won’t my desert tortoise hatchling eat?

February 8th, 2010

While I appreciate all suggestions, I’d prefer it if you didn’t answer unless you have experience with the care of desert tortoises. I’ve found already that there are a lot of misconceptions about them, from people who have never had one.

My desert tortoise hatchling won’t eat anything I put out for it. It’s a few weeks before hibernation is supposed to start, so I decided it would be pointless to start planting alfalfa and clover for grazing, and instead I’m offering rose petals, grape leaves, and grass, which, according to the TAP, are acceptable foods for a hatchling. But I’ve watched really closely, and it doesn’t seem that the baby has taken any of it! It’s been about two days, and I’m worried. Adult tortoises, I know, can go a long time without sustenance, but this one is just a baby. I did give it some water, in which he soaked and drank, and I’m hoping this will help a little, but I think he needs to get some nutrition soon. Help!
I know that a tortoise’s appetite should decrease before hibernation, but I’m not sure if my tortoise is going to hibernate, as it is a hatchling.
Yes I have a permit, but that has nothing to do with my question.

My very, very old, black eyed dwarf hamster?

February 8th, 2010

His name is Ramen, and I’ve had him for a year and a half. He used to be pretty aggressive, and when he was little he had sandy colored fur. That’s how we got the name. When he grew, his fur darkened, along with his attitude, which calmed down, and the fur along his spine got very dark, that’s how I identified him as a dwarf. He never had any problems, but he outlived two hamsters, Nyx and Moka. (Moka died of wet-tail and Nyx of a stomach tumor.) He’s very very sweet, when you hold him, he constantly licks your fingers, he never pees or bites, and if you leave the door of his cage open, he will wait patiently until he sees a hand to climb onto. The only health problem he has is with his eyes. Almost every time he wakes up, one is stuck shut with an eye-boogie. I always help him open it and rub his ears with a warm cloth, because he likes that. (His ear is deformed but he likes when I rub them.) He makes little puffy snoring noises because of his age, and my love for the little guy is unmeasurable. Out of the five years I’ve raised hamsters, he has to be my favorite. He has little patches of rough skin on his stomach, and his age shows in how big (fat) he is. The rough patches is just saggy, old skin. I want to do something special for him when he goes, so is there anything I can do now to make his life more comfortable? He really likes oats and apple slices, and the little apple-alfalfa treats I get for him from wal-mart. Should I make a little coffin? A little headstone? I’m sorry this sounds kind of morbid but this little guy is my life. :(

Explain the consequences for the farmer of putting wet hay bales in the barn. (biological reasons)?

February 8th, 2010

Background: Every dairy farmer knows the expression: “Make hay while the sun
shines.” This is because the grass and alfalfa that is grown for hay (to feed cows throughout the year) must be cut and completely dried in the fields before it is compressed into hay bales and stored in the barn
hayloft. If the hay is baled and stored in the barn while it is either still
green or damp from rain the results are disastrous for the farmer.

It has to do with cellular respiration
